How to create an SNC-aligned lesson plan in Pakistan, step by step

The actual sequence, from finding the right SLO document to a plan ready for review.

This is the mechanical, step-by-step version of writing an SNC-aligned lesson plan โ€” for the policy background on what the SNC (now the National Curriculum of Pakistan, or NCP) actually is, a separate explainer post on this Journal covers that directly. Here, the focus is the sequence itself.

Step one: locate the current SNC/NCP SLO document for your specific subject and grade. This sounds obvious and is the step most often shortcut under time pressure โ€” pulling last term's document, or a colleague's notes, instead of the current one. Since the transition is still uneven across subjects, confirming you have the right, current version matters more here than for an already-settled provincial syllabus.

Step two: cross-check that SLO document against the textbook chapter you're actually about to teach. In a transition period, these two don't always agree on sequencing or emphasis โ€” a textbook might introduce a concept in a different order than the current SLO document expects. Note explicitly where they disagree rather than assuming they match; this is the single most common source of a plan that looks SNC-aligned but isn't.

Step three: write the plan's structure starting from the SLO, not the topic โ€” subject, chapter, the specific SLO wording (not a paraphrase), then activities, then homework, in that order. The SLO comes first on the page for a reason: everything after it should trace back to it, not the other way around.

Step four: design each activity to target a specific SLO verb โ€” identify, explain, calculate, compare, label โ€” rather than a general "discussion" or "activity about the topic." If an activity can't be tied to a specific observable outcome from step three, it's worth reconsidering whether it belongs in this plan or a different one.

Step five: build the homework to test the same SLO the lesson taught, not a related-but-different one that happened to be nearby in the textbook. Homework that quietly drifts from the lesson's actual SLO undermines the whole point of building the plan around outcomes in the first place.

A worked example across all six steps: for a Class 4 Social Studies chapter on community helpers, step one might surface an SLO reading "students will be able to identify the roles of at least four community helpers and explain why each is important." Step two checks that against the textbook's chapter, which may still list five or six helpers from an older edition โ€” worth noting explicitly rather than silently picking one count. Step three builds the plan around the SLO's exact wording. Step four designs an activity where students actually name and explain roles, not just a general class discussion about "helpers." Step five sets homework asking students to identify and explain one helper from their own neighborhood, testing the same "identify and explain" outcome. Step six checks the whole thing once more against the textbook before it's finalized.

The most common mistake across this sequence isn't skipping a step outright โ€” it's step three and four blending together, where an activity gets designed first and an SLO gets retrofitted to justify it afterward. That order produces a plan that reads as SNC-aligned on the surface without the SLO actually driving what happens in the room, which defeats the purpose of following these steps in the first place.

Step six: a final pass reviewing the whole plan against the textbook's current pacing from step two โ€” does the sequence still make sense given what's actually printed and available to students, or does it assume a transition that hasn't fully happened yet in this specific classroom?
